The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent honors show draws close, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
