A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.

Market Movement in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.

One account, which registered on the site last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A new rule introduced on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from elections to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
